Our neighbourhood has a very handy collection of shops within walking distance of our apartment. I set out on my own yesterday afternoon to visit the closest fruit and vegetable shtall (a deliberate mix of shop and stall) and documented the journey. It's a good thing I had the past seven years in nearly sidewalk-less Ladner, because you cannot avoid stepping out off the sidewalks here in Amman.
When we first arrived in Amman it drove us crazy to see everyone walking on the streets. Largely because pedestrians have some ridiculous rights here. You absolutely DO NOT want to hit a pedestrian while driving. And sometimes that's a little challenging because pedestrians here engage in games of Frogger on busy, busy streets. In particular, they seem to enjoy crossing at traffic circles. But that's going to be part of another post: Driving.
Now that we've been here almost four weeks and walked some of the streets, we are beginning to understand the appeal of the road. Join me...
